Pictures of houses visited.

We visited three of Abbey fields houses to get a feel of the people and the environment in which they live. It helped immensely to talk to the residence and find out what they thought was important in the houses and what they liked.

The first house ws in Rondebosch, named the Sutherland House

The second wasin Rondebosch East, named Ted's House

and the last was in Gugulethu, named Entembeni

  1. It was really interesting seeing the different types of houses that Abbeyfield runs. They were all extremely different in character and design, with Entembeni being the most modern and recently built. I thought that the Entembeni house had a great basic layout with two 'wings' of bedrooms and a central core unit consisting of kitchen, dining and lounge. However, as we saw, there was a lot of wasted space and thus the design was essentially flawed. What we did learn from this is that the residents tend to spend much of their time within their bedrooms. The small bedrooms and extra large bedrooms in the Entembeni therefore is not the most ideal. Our design shall take the best points of this house, while adjusting the applicable areas to create spaces more in line with the needs of the elderly who reside in such homes.
